The Albatross - Ship Sheet Draft
A GURPS Spaceships build of The Albatross, laid over Tim’s own three-deck schematic. It is a proposal from the crew’s side of the table: Tim owns the ship and has the final word on every number here.
Open the full ship sheet → It has the deck plan with three views (as built, as she is now, and the refit plan), the twenty-slot list, the alien gear, the running costs and the open questions.

What She Is Now
- The passenger cabin on deck A was gutted for cargo before the crew took her.
- The ten weapon mounts are all empty. Empty mounts carry cargo instead (15 tons in total).
- The old mess hall holds the alien jump drive Shackleton Magellan found in Session 10. It needs no power from the reactor, takes about four hours to charge after a jump, and a hit while it is charged would destroy the ship.
- Her sublight drive is reactionless (Tim’s ruling, Session 14). She needs only a minuscule fuel top-up for the reactor every so often.
- The alien navigation device sits by the cockpit and runs on a power source nobody aboard can find.
- Both of the reactor’s power points feed the drives, so rearming her needs a bigger reactor or a drive shut down to fire.
The Refit Plan
The alien drive stays where it is. Two slots change, for $600K plus $100K for the automed:
- Front [2], the gutted passenger cabin: becomes a habitat with a proper mess hall and galley, back on deck A beside the old one.
- Front [5], one cargo hold: becomes a habitat with a one-bed sickbay and a fifth cabin, so Six, Rock Lavey, Shackleton Magellan, Ronin Sanchez and Marlo Petrak each get their own.
What it buys: a sickbay meets the equipment need for Surgery at +2, where Rock’s crash kit counts as improvised gear at −5. That is a 7-point swing on Surgery, and +2 on Diagnosis, First Aid and Physician. The price is 30 tons of cargo space, out of about 150.
A cheaper version, $300K: convert only the gutted passenger cabin, into a two-bed sickbay. All three cargo holds stay, the crew eat in the small galleys their cabins already have, and one cabin stays shared.
Either way, the refit needs a starship engineer or a yard, and Tim sets the time and fee.
For the Crew to Weigh In On
- Full refit, the cheaper sickbay-only version, or something else?
- Is a fifth cabin worth 15 tons of cargo?
- Would anyone rather spend the money on rearming the empty weapon mounts?
