In most cases the chromed augment for limited, practical reasons — replacement parts for a body damaged or destroyed. Cybernetics is cheaper and faster than a bio-engineered replacement, so many opt for implants. These replacements require drug regimens in the short term to let the body adapt to the new systems; more advanced changes, or rapid transformations, demand ongoing treatment for years to prevent rejection.

As with anything, some take it to the extreme — not just needed replacements but procedures for pure vanity. People like this often appear more machine than human.
