Bio-hackers and flesh architects, Skin Freaks use bio-engineering to modify the very essence of life in unimaginable ways. Many changes are simple — cat-like eyes for style and night vision, a new tint to the skin, a set of gills, or an extra pair of hands. Some are necessary, like a replacement for a limb lost in an industrial accident. A few go to extreme measures.

The extremes live out on the edges of society. Not quite human any more, but also not quite something fully unique, they operate in the shadows, quietly looking for the next evolution. Some have gone far enough that their DNA is no longer recognized as fully human by the Federal Republic of Worlds — questions of their legality and their rights under the law remain open.

Notable Traits

Many offer skills to employers beyond those of normal humans. A gilled-up person is a cheaper option for underwater work than a full diver once the equipment costs are counted. Some offer unique abilities that appeal to the more criminal elements.

Their key advantage is concealment: many passive detection systems cannot pick up these modifications, giving the Skin Freak an edge over other modified individuals — especially when the modifications are designed to mimic a normal human appearance.
