Vortex Engine
Overview
A vortex engine is a device used to create a portal into hyperspace. The engines are designs to generate a singularity that is able to breach physical space into hyperspace. These engines use large amounts of power, so much so that it is impractical for these engines to be deployed to most ships. Engines are more commonly found built into gates, that are able to open portals along hyperspace pathways.
The power requirements of Vortex Engines are so great, that many common power generation sources are unable to singularly create all the power at a given time. Most setups store energy in capacitors or batteries over a period of time to operate the engine. Generation level of the power source, and other power needs can effect the time needed to charge these power supplies. In addition many ships equipped with vortex engines will power down all non-essential systems when opening the portal.
