Castellan Biodynamics Draft
Leadership: Board of directors (a senior charter-house of the Meridian System Concord); Asset Recovery & Compliance under Sr. Officer Yael Corrin
Territory: HQ on Ionera (Meridian's capital); Greenmarch foundries beside the capital's greenbelt; black-site on Rarerold; sells across the Federal Republic
Goals
- Profit from vat-grown 'assets' on military/security/labor contracts
- Recover escaped property — including Six — quietly
- Keep its replicants classed as property, not persons
- Protect its Concord seat and Federal license from scandal
“Castellan Biodynamics. Better People.™” — corporate slogan (unintentionally honest)
Overview
A military bio-engineering contractor and a senior charter-house of the Meridian System Concord — one of the corporate houses that govern that chartered world. Castellan designs, grows, and conditions human-based replicants and clones it calls “assets”: it sells them, by contract, as combat and boarding units (the MACE-pattern that produced Six), hazardous-labor crews, and security models. To Castellan they are not people. They are inventory — grown to spec, conditioned, racked in cryostasis between deployments, and owned under Federal law. They are precisely the “slave class” that P.E.T.A. wages its holy war over.
Charter & Standing
Castellan holds two intertwined writs:
- a seat on the Meridian Concord (a share of governing the world it’s based on), and
- a Federal asset-production license under the Republic’s licensing power (see Politics and Citizenship).
The arrangement exists because the Republic wanted bio-engineered labor and soldiers without being seen to make them. So it licenses houses like Castellan to do the growing, keep the profits, and own the moral mess — and then quietly buys the product. That makes the Republic Castellan’s best and most deniable customer, and gives Castellan powerful friends who would rather the whole business stay out of the newsfeeds.
What It Makes — the Asset Program
Vat-grown, human-based replicants (Tim’s rule: human-based clones, no exotic templates). An asset is grown in the Greenmarch foundries, then conditioned — skills and combat doctrine loaded as software rather than trained over years (which is why Six’s mastery reads as preloaded combat software). Between contracts they’re cryo-racked. Known lines:
- MACE-pattern — boarding/breaching combat assets (Six). Built to cross the dark, cut a hull, and clear a crew.
- Labor crews — hazardous-environment work (the kind that kills wildcatters on worlds like Thides II).
- Security models — guards and enforcers, often leased to other corporations.
Every asset carries a concealed maker’s mark and batch code (Six’s is CASTELLAN // MACE-06) and a conditioning profile Castellan can, in principle, re-assert or wipe if it gets close enough — a leash, and a vulnerability.
The maintenance drug. Clones sold as labour need a genetically engineered injection, supplied in Castellan-stamped vials, to survive. Without it their minds deteriorate and they turn feral. Told to the crew by Harding Roberts on Peric IV D. Confirmed Session 11.
Structure
- Genesis — R&D and asset design.
- The Foundry (the Greenmarch complex, on Ionera beside the capital’s greenbelt) — gestation, growth, and cryo-storage.
- Conditioning — the software/doctrine loaded into each asset.
- Charter Affairs / Legal — protects the Concord seat, the Federal license, and the “property” classification in court.
- Asset Recovery & Compliance — gets strays back. See below.
Asset Recovery & Compliance
An escaped asset is treated as a recovery problem, not a manhunt — discreet by design, because the last thing Castellan wants is a headline that its “secure” stock walks out the door. The division runs on standing bounties, deniable retrieval contractors, and records access. It is fronted by Sr. Compliance Officer Yael Corrin — cold, patient, and entirely literal about it: to her, Six is not a fugitive, he’s a misfiled asset to be re-shelved or written off. She rarely travels to the frontier herself; she sends contractors, money, and paperwork — and follows the data.
History
A respected (if quietly controversial) supplier of bio-engineered labor and muscle — until P.E.T.A. cracked one of its Greenmarch cryo-vaults and freed a batch of assets. Most were recaptured or killed; a handful, Six among them, are still loose. Castellan wants them back before anyone tallies how many “products” are unaccounted for — a number that would be very bad for its license and its Concord seat.
- Session 11 - The Cost of a Clone’s Life — Harding Roberts told the crew that the identical workers of Peric IV D are clones bought from Castellan, and that they need an injected, genetically engineered drug to survive. The crew delivered a shipment of that drug in Castellan-stamped vials.
